North Carolina Master Chorale

The Master Chorale holds auditions in late August and early January. To be contacted about an appointment, please register here.

The Chorale has approximately 170 volunteer members. This ensemble rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:45 PM at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Raleigh. Some additional dress rehearsals are required. Singers pay dues (currently $50/semester) and must buy their music. Singers are required to provide their own concert wardrobe (designated black formal attire for women and tuxedos for men). Need-based dues scholarships are available.

Chorale members perform in approximately three-six programs per season, depending upon programming. As the Resident Chorus of the North Carolina Symphony, the Chorale’s schedule often includes opportunities to perform with the NC Symphony.

Chorale auditions are held in late August and, generally, in early January. Auditions are 10 minutes long, with the Music Director and the NCMC accompanist. Singers are to bring a prepared classical song or aria that showcases his or her strengths. The NCMC accompanist is provided. Singers are asked to sight-sing and vocalize with piano accompaniment. Prior choral music singing experience is required.

In addition to the large symphonic chorus, the Chorale, we have opportunities for qualified singers to participate in more select Chamber Choir performances. These projects include a lighter jazz/pop Valentine’s program, “Romance in the Air” sung by a 16-voice ensemble, a 60-voice Baroque choir for specialized North Carolina Symphony projects, as well as other configurations based upon the stylistic demands. These ensembles have a much more limited rehearsal period and include some Monday evening rehearsals. Auditions are very competitive, and singers are expected to have degrees in music and/or extensive experience in choral music. Interested singers should contact Music Director, Al Sturgis directly at: (sturgis [at] ncmasterchorale.org).
